A CH-47C Chinook helicopter, tail number unknown), transports a six-pack configuration of M102 105 mm Howitzers. The aircraft was assigned to and the lift performed by A Company, 159th Aviation Battalion, Fort Campbell, Kentucky, in the SON Drop Zone. Conducted in 1972 or 73, this was a feasibility test lift. The cargo hook on the C Model was rated to 20,000 lbs. The load weighed in at over 19,000 lbs. The concept was to have one aircraft move all the tubes in one battery, another aircraft would carry the basic load and a third aircraft would carry all the crew members. The lift was feasible but not practical. The fact that if one aircraft went down for whatever reason the entire battery would be out of commission did not bode well with the Brigade Commander on down to the Battery Commander.
