          Boeing CH-47D Model Chinook Helicopters

In service to the United States Army

Two "Sugar Bears North" CH-47D Chinooks transport external cargo above the 60th parallel in Alaska while a brilliant Aurora Borealis lights up the night sky, January 2002.

Nearly all of the 444 production D model Chinook helicopters listed on this page were conversions from previous models. 443 D models were delivered to the U.S. Army. One aircraft, 84-24166, crashed during a Boeing company test flight and was lost. The production list (does not include prototypes) for the D models includes all 425 tail numbers that were converted from previous U.S. Army A, B, and C models, 7 former Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) C models, 9 Augusta built C models, as well as the 3 tail numbers that were manufactured as new helicopters. 98-02000 was the last D model built and was delivered to the United States Army Reserve (USAR), located at Fort Hood, Texas, in early 2002. MH-47D helicopter tail numbers are not listed on this page.

165 A models were converted to D models.

75 B models were converted to D models.

185 C models were converted to D models.

7 former RAAF C models were converted to D models.

9 Augusta built C models were converted to D models.

3 airframes were manufactured as new helicopters.

As of 14 June 2009, 320 D models were in service. 124 D models have been lost due to accidents, mechanical failure, enemy fire, conversions to other models, sold to foregin governments, or have been scrapped as part of the F model manufacturing process.

Three aircraft were selected as prototypes for conversion to D model helicopters. A model Chinook 65-08008 was re-serial numbered as 76-08008 for the prototyping. Later 76-08008 was inducted into the program and became production D model 92-00304. B model 67-18479 was re-serial numbered as 76-18479 for the prototyping. Sometime after testing at Fort Rucker, Alabama, in 1982, 76-18479 was assigned to Fort Eustis, Virginia, and was utilized as a Category B D model training device in the 67U maintenance course. The third and final prototype was CH-47C 67-18538. 67-18538 was re-serial numbered as 76-18538 for the prototyping and was also utilized at Fort Eustis as a training device. On 14 October 1992, 76-18538 was inducted into the program and became production D model 92-00303.
